Mustang Division (9- and 10-year-olds) if-necessary final
Kiwanis 9, La Bruna Industries 7: It is a pattern that would make
most coaches cringe, but not Ike Carcich.
All season long, Carcich watched as his Kiwanis team would
surrender early leads before relying on late-inning heroics to
produce a number of come-from-behind victories.
Thursday night’s if-necessary championship game against La Bruna
Industries was no different.
Despite falling behind by five runs after four innings, Kiwanis
rallied with five runs in the top of the fifth and took the lead for
good in the top of the sixth to capture the CSA Mustang Division
title at the Glendale Sports Complex.
“That’s kind of been our trademark,” said Carcich, whose squad
trailed, 4-1, after one inning and, 7-2, after four.
“But the kids hang tough and they always stay positive and we wait
for that one big inning to give us that lift and that’s what
happened.”
Kiwanis (13-9-1, 5-1 in the playoffs) -- which took four of five
meetings with La Bruna Industries between the regular season and the
playoffs, including a 9-7 win Tuesday, which forced the if-necessary
final -- relied heavily on the efforts of Eric Verso and Andrew
Carcich to key its big fifth inning.
Verso -- who went three for four with three runs scored -- singled
to load the bases with no outs, setting the table for Carcich, who
blasted a three-run triple, cutting the deficit to 7-5.
Carcich and Jake Magid both scored to tie the game, and Ian
Sternau and Verso both scored in the sixth to give Kiwanis its first
lead since 1-0.
“The thing we preach with these guys is to hang tough and keep a
resilient attitude and at this age, that’s hard to accomplish,” Ike
Carcich said.
“La Bruna’s a great team, but I think we got more creative with
our pitching. We wanted to give them different looks each time.”
Sternau and James Chung combined to walk six times and score five
runs for Kiwanis, which also received a hit from Andy Potter.
La Bruna Industries (12-11, 4-2) -- the seventh-seeded team, who
upset the third-seeded Mighty Drillers and second-seeded Sheffield
House to get to the final -- was led by Chris Veselich, who went two
for three with three runs batted in.
A.J. Kim, A.J. La Bruna, Joe Liberto and Angus Ritchie all had
hits for La Bruna Industries and combined to score five of the
team’s seven runs.
