It’s possible 7-year-old Alex Lupinski could create a revolution

in sandwich recipes.

Alex joined other students in Linda Pebsworth’s first-grade class

at Fremont Elementary School Tuesday in an attempt to create unique

sandwiches for the Got Milk? Peanut Butter Sandwich Contest.

In an attempt to take an award for most delicious sandwich, Alex

named his sandwich “Dr. Delishis.” Between two slices of bread, Alex

placed bananas, chocolate syrup, marshmallows, peanut butter,

goldfish crackers and chocolate icing.

“And did I mention goldfish?” Alex asked his peers as he explained

what was loaded into his culinary creation. “At first I didn’t have a

name, and then I thought, why not Dr. Delishis? I mean, it looks

delicious, doesn’t it?”

Students were photographed and videotaped so that their creations

-- also rated for best sandwich name and most disgusting sandwich --

can be submitted for the contest. If selected as the winner, one of

Pebsworth’s students would win an all-expense-paid trip to New York

City for four days.

The contest will select one winning recipe from children 6 to 12

from across the state. The winner will be announced in August. While

in New York, the child with the winning recipe will unveil his or her

sandwich at the Peanut Butter & Co. sandwich shop, attend a Broadway

production of “The Lion King” and go on a $300 shopping spree at toy

giant FAO Schwarz’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue.

Pebsworth’s students came up with a variety of things to squeeze

between slices of white or wheat bread. Ingredients included peanut

butter, chocolate icing, gummy worms and gummy bears, Reese’s Peanut

Butter Cups, coconut shavings, pickles, colored sprinkles, bacon

bits, caramel syrup, strawberries, bananas, Oreo cookies, mixed nuts

and American cheese.

Names of sandwiches varied from “Rockalicious Devil Head Worm

Gummy Head Sandwich” and “The Double Marshmallow” to “Butterfly,”

“The Moo-Tricious” and the “Minnie Mouse Nut Banana Bonanza

Sandwich,” which won best name in Pebsworth’s class.

Pebsworth had no problem encouraging her students to do something

less academic and more creative Tuesday.
