Locals to compete at Janet Evans Invite
Twelve current or former high school standouts are scheduled to
compete at the prestigious 2002 Speedo Janet Evans Invitational at
USC’s McDonald’s Swim Stadium, which begins today and runs through
Sunday.
Competition begins at 5 p.m. today with the 800-meter freestyle.
Preliminaries will commence at 9 a.m. the remaining three days, with
the finals set to start at 5 p.m.
Leading the list of the nine female entries are four college
sophomores, including three former Crescenta Valley High athletes.
UC Irvine distance specialist Alexis Sheridan, along with the
Fresno State University pair of Kim Hitch and Tawne Fishback will all
represent Swim Pasadena.
La Canada graduate and current University of Nevada-Reno talent
Alyssa Chin will be representing Rose Bowl Aquatics.
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy graduate and USC freshman Melissa
Siracuse is another in the long list of athletes representing Swim
Pasadena.
Rounding out the list of female competitors is a quartet of Swim
Pasadena entries representing CV or La Canada.
Falcon seniors Jessica Ban and Lindsay Taylor, and Spartan
juniors Renee Nicholas and Jennifer Wetzel are all scheduled to
compete in multiple events.
On the boys’ side, La Canada junior Grant Chin is competing for
Rose Bowl Aquatics and fellow Spartan Cameron Curtis is representing
Swim Pasadena, as is CV junior Jeff DeJong.
La Crescenta Babe Ruth 15s rebound
The La Crescenta Babe Ruth 15-year-old squad avoided elimination
Tuesday night with a 6-1 win against Inland Valley in the Southern
California State Tournament at Stevenson Field in El Segundo.
Robert Setina and Dustin Kunkel combined for a one-hitter for La
Crescenta (1-1), which plays at 5 p.m. today against either El Centro
or Simi Valley in another second-chance bracket game.
The District 4 representative -- which is coached by Manny Amit --
collected 10 hits, led by Erick Avila and Nick Lukasiewicz, who had
three hits each.
Lukasiewicz and Jonathan Kim both had doubles and Dominic Primo
added a single as part of a three-run second inning, which was all
the offensive support Setina and Kunkel would need.
Setina (1-0) tossed four innings, allowing the one hit and two
walks, striking out four. Kunkel pitched the final three innings to
earn the save, recording six strikeouts.
Lukasiewicz finished with two doubles, two runs scored and a run
batted in, Avila had a double, Primo had two hits, Mike Uyemura had
a hit and In Hee Lee singled and scored twice for La Crescenta,
which increased its lead with two runs in the fourth and one in the
fifth.
Hoover honored by Glendale City Council
The Hoover boys’ tennis team was honored Tuesday night by the
Glendale City Council at City Hall.
The Tornadoes received certificates from Mayor Rafi Manoukian for
winning the school’s first CIF title in any sport since 1975.
Hoover beat Palos Verdes Peninsula, 11-7, in late May to capture
the CIF Southern Section Division I title.
The team was also honored by the Glendale Unified School District
for its accomplishments in the 2002 season, which also included
winning the Pacific League and capturing the program’s first CIF
title in school history, which dates back to 1929.
