The closure of A.A. Baker’s Hardware at the corner of San Fernando
and Los Feliz roads marks the end of an era. The store has been a
part of the local scenery since the Baker family opened it in 1915.
For years, the store expanded little by little from its original
1,600 square feet to its current 17,000 square feet. Brett Thomson,
who bought the store in 1975, has liquidated the inventory and leased
the 2.2-acre property to Sav-On Drugs. The hardware store closed its
doors Sunday for the last time, and the building could be demolished
as early as next month.
Thomson will sell off the last of its assets -- including shopping
carts, computers, shelves and other office equipment -- in a yard
sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 28 and 29.
