Delphi Academy to make a move

Gary Moskowitz

There is a buzz around Delphi Academy of Los Angeles’ campus these

days, but it’s not because of the approaching winter holidays.

Students and faculty at the private, nonreligious school are

preparing to move from their location off Foothill Boulevard and

Cornishon Avenue to a new school facility in Lake View Terrace.

Classes at the new school site will begin Jan. 13.

Delphi has been renting space at the former site of Foothill

Intermediate School since Delphi’s inception in 1984, said Robin Shereshevsky, head of admissions at the school.

Delphi has been sharing its facilities with five other educational

institutions at the current location, including The Learning Castle,

Foothill School, Renaissance Academy, Toddler University and Hogg’s

Hollow.

“We have always wanted our own place, so we are very excited,”

Shereshevsky said. “We need our own home, with room for growth and

security.”

The 28,000-foot facility in Lake View Terrace sits on 9 acres and

will include a tutoring center, music, art and science rooms, an

up-to-date computer lab, skylights, built-in cabinets and a track and

soccer field next to the school.

The school’s Delphi Parent Assn. is picking up most of the

$5.7-million price tag of the project, Shereshevsky said.

Delphi Academy Los Angeles is one of seven Delphi Academy schools

across the country that use the study methods and educational

philosophy of L. Ron Hubbard to teach students in grades K-12.

Delphi allows students to work at their own pace and maintains a

student-to-teacher ratio that ranges from 1-10 to 1-20, Shereshevsky

said. About 13 students will graduate from Delphi in 2003.

The main advantage of the new school will be having space just for

themselves, said Delphi senior Jon Dohring, 19, of Glendale.

“It will be great to have our own campus finally,” Dohring said.

“We’ll have more room and more freedom to do things we want or need

to do at school.”

Classes at Delphi will finish for the holidays Friday. Faculty

will begin moving Dec. 26 and classes will resume Jan. 13 at 11341

Brainard Ave. in Lake View Terrace. For more information, call
