CV Girls’ Under-13 Soccer team advances in State Open Cup

The Crescenta Valley Soccer Club girls’ Under-13 team went 2-0-1

during Saturday and Sunday’s pool-play competition of the State Open

Cup at the Lancaster Soccer Complex, allowing it to advance to the

round of 32, which begins at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Despite the courageous efforts of 12-year-old Nancy Avesyan, CV

(28-12-9) tied Mission Viejo Soccer Club, 0-0, in its opening match

Saturday.

Avesyan battled flu-like symptoms and nausea for the majority of

Saturday morning, but still made the trip to Lancaster and almost

converted a penalty kick, contributing to the all-important tie for

Reggie Rivas’ squad.

“She changed the whole momentum of the [match] when she came in,”

Rivas said.

“They were so beat up and banged up, but they want to win the

whole thing and they all committed themselves to not letting sickness

or injuries stop them. It was inspiring watching them play that

hard.”

Trailing, 1-0, in its second match against Fullerton Rangers Youth

Soccer Club Net Quest, CV tied it in the 55th minute as Avesyan

scored off a rebound shot that landed in front of the net.

Then with three minutes left in the second 35-minute half, Kim

Carcich scored the match winner, with Annie Brock recording the

assist.

That victory set up Sunday’s battle for first place in the pool

between CV and the Los Alamitos-based Beach Soccer Club Black team.

CV prevailed, 1-0, with Elise Franklin scoring in the 12th minute

on a breakaway.

Goalkeepers Stevie Cline and Emma Dearman contributed to the

strong defensive effort that was led by the quartet of sweeper Elena

Torres and marking backs Candice Chessum, Hannah Green and Sharis

Harootun.

Next up for CV -- which reached the semifinals of last year’s

tournament, falling on penalty kicks -- is Revolution, which won all

three of its pool-play matches and outscored its opponents, 15-0.
