Flint Canyon Tennis Club sale stopped
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Joe Thompson was ecstatic when he heard
the news.
Flint Canyon Tennis Club was in the process of being sold to
resident Don Sheppard, but the sale was stopped late last week. For
tennis fanatics such as Thompson, finding out about the change in
plans was welcome news.
“The club’s an asset to the community,” he said. “We felt like
tennis players are just as important as anybody else, and should have
a place to go to enjoy their sport just like anybody else.”
Members were told late last week that the deal had been stopped,
said Thompson, who coaches the girls’ tennis team at La Canada High
School.
“There were a lot of very, very upset people when they found out
it was going to be sold,” he said. “And they were very relieved to
find out it had been unsold.”
Sheppard could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
The club has been a staple of Berkshire Avenue for about 25
years. Boasting a family membership of about 350, the club holds
tournaments and offers several programs for children. Members are
local residents as well as those from other areas.
Man killed in crash on Angeles Crest Highway
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- A man in his mid-30s was killed after a
Chevy Camaro traveling in the opposite direction on Angeles Crest
Highway veered into his lane and collided with his Honda Civic, a
California Highway Patrol officer said.
The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the
scene, CHP Officer Vince Bell said. It is not known how fast the
other driver, a 19-year-old Los Angeles man, was going, or why he
crossed the center line.
The crash occurred about 2 1/2 miles north of La Canada
Flintridge about 7:50 p.m. Monday. The crash is still under
investigation. No arrests have been made.
