Richard “Dick” Bentley
Richard “Dick” Bentley was born in Seville, Calif., Sept. 9, 1915. In 1917, his parents, Eva and J. Ray Bentley, moved the family to Glendale, where they became actively involved in building what was then a new community.
His father founded the Bentley Lumber Company, and was the primary supplier for much of the development that occurred in Glendale’s early years.
Dick attended Hoover High School where he met Evelyn Krotz, the woman who would later become his bride of 64 years. He attended College of the Pacific, now University of the Pacific, and played football for the legendary coach, Amos Alonzo Stagg. He was an education major desiring to teach and coach young people, and assisted Coach Stagg for a short time.
At the onset of World War II, Dick was unable to serve on the battlefield due to a football injury. He instead served his country behind the scenes in the aerospace industry as an analyst for Aeroquip Corporation. Dick retired after 35 years of employment with that company.
Dick Bentley entered heaven on May 29, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Jim Stratton, and Debby and David Ogas, four grandchildren (three married), and two great-grandchildren, all of whom reside in Orange County.
Dick is well remembered in Glendale for his lifelong involvement and leadership in community organizations; his most recent involvements include Kiwanis and the Glendale Old Timers. He belonged to the Glendale Baptist church throughout his youth and, as an adult, he served his faith and community through the Glendale Methodist Church, until he and Evelyn moved to Huntington Beach in 2001.
As a man who always “walked his talk,” Dick leaves a legacy rich in history, culture, and Christian values. This legacy will continue to influence his family for generations to come, and serves as a source of inspiration for all who knew him.
A tribute to Dick Bentley will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Lighthouse Coastal Community Church, 301 Magnolia St., Costa Mesa, Calif., 92627. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dick Bentley’s memory to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, c/o Mark Boyer at P.O. Box 8366, Huntington Beach, Calif., 92615-8366.
