Hughes is First Recipient of Paul Mayo Memorial Scholarship

Gelsey Hughes, a member of the 2006 graduating class at La Cañada High School, was the recipient of the $1,000 Paul Mayo Memorial Scholarship.

This Glendale Community Foundation scholarship, given for the first time, is in memory of Paul Mayo, an icon of choral music in Southern California. Criteria for the award included being a graduating senior from La Cañada High School, participation in the high school choral music program, plans to major or minor in choral music at a four-year college or university and financial need.

Gelsey, daughter of Carolyn and Chuck Hughes, will attend the University of Washington in September. She will major in theater arts with a minor in music and also plans to join her university’s choral group and continue with voice lessons .She was active in the high school’s choral program for four years with participation in woman’s ensembles, concert choir, and chamber singers. She also enjoys barbershop singing and was a member of a barbershop group called Choral Pink. In her application, she wrote, “I’ll never stop singing!”

Gelsey and her parents were honored with a tea at Penelope’s Café on June 17. Also in attendance at this tea was Linda Mayo, widow of Paul Mayo, Tom Miller, director of the Glendale Community Foundation, and Lori MacDonald, coordinator of the scholarship.

Founded in 1956, the Glendale Community Foundation is a publicly supported charitable endowment with nearly $8 million in assets.
