Actor Haley Joel Osment May Face 6 Months in Jail

Actor Haley Joel Osment has been charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence resulting from a car accident on Flintridge Avenue in La Cañada Flintridge on July 20.

Osment, perhaps best known for his performance in the film “The Sixth Sense,” was charged with a total of four counts: driving under the influence, driving with a blood level of .08 or greater, possession of marijuana while driving and being a minor under the age of 21 with a blood alcohol level of 0.15 percent or greater, said a spokeswoman for Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

According to Sgt. Mark Slater of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station, Osment’s blood level taken by the CV deputies was 0.16. The legal alcohol limit for adult drivers is a blood alcohol level of .08, for minors under 21 it is .05 for criminal charges.

If convicted Osment could be sentenced to six months in jail.

“Typically a misdemeanor includes a fine and six months in jail,” Sgt. Slater said.

CV Sheriff’s deputies responded to the July 20 accident. Osment allegedly lost control of his 1995 Saturn causing the vehicle to flipped over. He suffered a broken rib and a shoulder injury. Osment was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Osment could be facing more than jail time.

“There is a zero tolerance policy for drivers under the age of 21 with the Department of Motor Vehicles,” Slater said.

Whenever someone is charged with DUI they must face both criminal charges through the courts and administrative charges through the DMV. Osment could also face losing his license for a year, Slater said.

The district attorney’s office has requested a $15,000 bail. Osment’s next court date is on Sept. 19, when he is scheduled to be arraigned in Glendale Superior Court.
