ASSISTEENS HONOR YOUNG WOMAN AT PRESENTATION

Assisteens, an auxiliary of the Assistance League of Glendale, had its annual member recognition and fundraiser on March 31 at the La Cañada Country Club.

Titled “Tropical Escape,” the event included lunch, silent auction, fashion show and senior presentation.

The senior presented was Nicole Navarro, of La Crescenta, who attends Crescenta Valley High School. Nicole will be attending Northern Arizona University where she will be studying education.

Modeling was done by the Assisteens members, including Naz Abghari, Meghan Amado, Amy Draney, Kacie Dragojlovic, Midori Fabricante, Emily Fairchild, Paige Farestveit, Abby Gabor, Amberly Gangi, Annalisa Gangi, Erin Gustafson, Alyssa Larson, Stephanie McGowan, Shannon Moore, Katie Nagao, Nicole Navarro, Natasha Reyes, Nicole Reyes, Sofia Rezvani, Amal Shaheen, Courtney Spitznagel, Elizabeth Veselich, Lisa Vitale, Kristen Ward, Janet Ward, Kelsey Warren, Mackinsey Woolever, Meaghan York, Sydney Zarate and Mondana Zargarnian.

Assisteens, with members from seventh to 12th grades, is a philanthropic organization that helps Glendale families. Some of the projects include, “adopting” needy families for the holidays, supporting the Desi Geestman Foundation and its efforts at the City of Hope, donating toys to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve “Toys for Tots” program and assisting the city of Glendale with its Winter Wonderland activities.

Assisteens also support the Assistance League of Glendale by staffing its thrift shop, Thrift Alley, each Saturday; assisting at the Festival of Trees, the annual December fundraiser; supplying books for use in its Operation School Bell project and providing table favors for monthly senior luncheons.

OLD LAS VEGAS NIGHT BENEFITS SYMPHONY

The Glendale Symphony Orchestra Assn. is planning an “Old Las Vegas Night,” with gaming, prizes and Western-style barbecue at 5 p.m. May 19 and at the home of Joan and Warren Binzley high atop Chevy Chase Canyon in Glendale.

Tickets are $60 per person, which includes $50 in gaming chips. The party will be held to benefit the Glendale Symphony Orchestra.

Sheila Murray is chairwoman of the event and will assisted by President Patrick Shahijanian, immediate past president Bill Holderness and board members Jack Kabateck, Mary Ann Plumley and Jane Garcin.

The Sardo Brothers Band will be playing Western music and ballroom standards for dancing.

CABRINI LITERARY GUILD HONORS YOUNG WRITERS

The Cabrini Literary Guild had its annual writing contest awards luncheon on April 12 at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. Awards were presented to 10 winners — five for fiction and five for non-fiction.

The winners in fiction are: first place Emily Loynachan, second place Brighton Early, third place Annabel Coe, all from Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. The fourth-place winner is Cassandra Feliciano, Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena, and fifth place is Nicole Rouse, Alverno High School in Sierra Madre.

The winners in nonfiction are: first place Alina Kung, second place Kelsey Vela, third place Meagan Fitzpatrick, fourth place Kati Farina and fifth place Hanna Guthrie. All students are from Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena.

The Chairwoman of the Writing Awards was Rosa Hohman. Speaker Karle Dickerson, magazine editor and educator, spoke to the winners on the importance of writing and encouraged them in this endeavor.

The Cabrini Literary Guild is a Glendale-based group originally founded to encourage writing. literature and philanthropy.

GOLF CLASSIC BENEFITS ORTHOPAEDIC HOSPITAL

The 18th annual Paul and Berniece Harbers Runyan Memorial Golf Classic will be on Monday at the Oakmont Country Club, 3100 Country Club Drive, Glendale.

The golf classic honors LPGA champion Annika Sorenstam.

Participating in the event is Glendale resident Dr. James V. Luck Jr., president, CEO and medical director of Orthopaedic Hospital.

Orthopaedic Hospital’s Golf Classic will direct its funds to benefit the Digital Radiology Project for the Urgent Care Center at the Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Center.

The Urgent Care Center serves as the primary entry point for more than 15,000 children with musculoskeletal conditions that are treated at this resource each year. The majority of these children receive follow-up care at Orthopaedic’s Outpatient Medical Center that is equipped with digital radiology.

The tournament format is shotgun scramble. The day begins at 9 a.m. with registration, breakfast and driving range practice. The tee-off is at noon with lunch on the course. A reception and silent auction begin at 5 p.m. followed at 6 p.m. by a buffet, auction and award presentation.
