South Pasadena man suspected of possessing lethal weapons released from jail

A South Pasadena man suspected of possessing lethal weapons was released from jail Wednesday morning on a bail bond, police said.

Eduardo Lopez, 35, was released at 9:30 a.m. after he was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of possessing two devices found in his home, said South Pasadena Police Officer Fernando Sandoval.

FBI agents and a number of local police agencies teamed up for a weapons search that shut down Fair Oaks Avenue for two hours Tuesday and resulted in Lopez’s arrest.

Federal agents and South Pasadena police closed down the 400 block of Fair Oaks Avenue and the northbound Fair Oaks offramp of the Pasadena (110) Freeway between 6 and 8:15 p.m. Tuesday to search a vehicle for a dangerous weapon, said Sandoval.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was brought in shortly after 7 p.m., Sandoval said. The search did not reveal the item FBI agents sought, but a police dog indicated the presence of evidence of a weapon.

A subsequent search of Lopez’s home in the 1500 block of Damond Avenue revealed two large bazooka-like weapons capable of firing steel projectiles, Sandoval said.

Sandoval said the weapons use acetylene to fire projectiles, and is capable of lethal damage. “We have no idea what is was used for, but it is a felony to possess or manufacture such a weapon,” he said.

Police officers from South Pasadena, Pasadena, Alhambra and Burbank helped set up the perimeter around the vehicle.
