Lancers enjoy Kopcha moment

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
La Salle 78, Cantwell Sacred Heart 69: The Lancers picked up an impressive road win thanks to the exploits of junior guard Sarah Kopcha, who scored a season-high 30 points and tallied six rebounds in a Camino Real League road victory Tuesday evening.
Sophomore guard Kandyce Smith added 18 points, six rebounds and eights assists, while Caroline Knop chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds for La Salle (13-6, 2-1), which is now off until Jan. 24.
The victory came a few days after the Lancers defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in nonleague play on Saturday afternoon, 47-37.
The Lancers outscored the visiting Knights, 16-8, in the fourth quarter as Smith paced the Lancers with a season-high 21 points and six rebounds, while Kopcha added nine points and Knop contributed nine rebounds and six points.
South Pasadena 40, Rosemead 37: For the second time this year, Tigers freshman Lexie Scholtz finished with a team-high 11 points in leading the Tigers to a nonleague road victory Monday night.
Sophia Hathaway added eight points, while both Victoria Pallares and Amber Partida scored seven points apiece for South Pasadena (14-5), which outscored Rosemead, 17-7, in the fourth quarter.
Long Beach Jordan 42, Maranatha 41: Despite a team-high 18 points from sophomore Kei Lani Ando, the Minutemen fell in the MLK Classic at Pasadena City College on Monday afternoon.
Alayah Byers connected on five of 11 field goals and finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and five steals for Maranatha (2-19).
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
AGBU Pasadena 54, AGBU Canoga Park 43: Senior guard Jackson Gourdikian scored a season-high 26 points in leading the Spartans to a home victory over their archrival in Westside League play on Tuesday evening.
Andy Ketsoyan added 13 points and five rebounds and the Sako duo of Sako Tarinian and Sako Garabedian combined for 17 rebounds as the Spartans led, 32-17, at the half.
Pasadena AGBU improved to 4-9 overall and 2-0 in league.
Marshall 48, Huntington Park College-Ready Academy 38: The Eagles pulled within a game of .500 thanks to the efforts of junior guard Evan Bynum, who scored a team-high 15 points, which accompanied his team-best seven assists and five rebounds at the Martin Luther King Showcase at Pioneer High on Monday afternoon.
Davin Hampton added 12 points and David Hardy contributed four steals for Marshall (9-10).
BOYS’ SOCCER
Flintridge Prep 2, Poly 0: Panthers goalie Chris Ward finished with eight saves, but the Panthers struggled to generate offense in a Prep League road defeat Tuesday afternoon.
Poly fell to 7-5-2 overall and 3-1 in league.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Poly 5, Los Angeles Baptist 0: Five Panthers scored goals as Poly went up 2-0 in the first half of Tuesday’s nonleague home game and rolled.
Noel Askins, Sarah Mendenhall, Katie Wardlow, Anna Wohl and Julia Yun all scored for Poly (13-2) as Evan Gancedo, Nora Johnson, Mendenhall and Yun added assists.
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Caltech in nonconference tri-meet: Caltech placed first in all but one of the events it competed in in knocking off Mills, 173-52, and St. Joseph (NY), 179-48, at home Monday afternoon.
Misha Raffie placed first for the Beavers in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 13 minutes, 21.47 seconds. The momentum continued in the next event for the Beavers as Marqaux Lopez won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.42.
Jacqueline Masehi-Lano, a Maranatha High alumna and San Marino resident, posted three individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle (25.54), 100-yard freestyle (56.47) and 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.26.
Janis Intoy posted a pair of first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:21.52) and 200-yard individual medley (2:37.66). Fellow senior Caitlin Regan also won two events — the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.98) and 500-yard freestyle (6:07.68).
The meet concluded with the team of Emily Shih, Dodd, Karen Dowling and Lopez winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:58.39.
Timi Kosztin won the three-meter (169.40) and one-meter diving (169.90) competitions by narrowly edging out teammate Jessica Swallow.
