Pasadena post office named for Goodall

President Obama signed a bill Monday to rename Pasadena’s main post office after longtime Altadena resident and Tuskegee Airman Lt. Oliver Goodall.

Goodall was a member of the group of 60 African-American U.S. Army Air Corps members arrested in January 1945 for seeking to integrate a whites-only officers’ club at an Army base in Indiana.

Their effort, known as the Freeman Field Mutiny, helped break down racial barriers and pave the way toward integration of Army facilities in 1949. Goodall later served for years as postal worker in Altadena.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) sponsored measure to name the post office at 281 E. Colorado Blvd. after Goodall.

“For more than 50 years, Goodall was dedicated to helping others -- as a Tuskegee Airman, public information officer and postal worker. We are very fortunate for the truly positive impact he had on our community, and his courageous life story, as well as his legacy of service, lives on and inspires us all,” Schiff said in a statement.

A ceremony to mark the change will take place in December or January.
