The Los Angeles music scene has given birth to a lot of different sounds over the decades. Among them have been the movements of folk-rock and alternative country that have resided in Laurel Canyon and Topanga, and now can be heard from the likes of the band I See Hawks in L.A., who will perform June 17 at the Coffee Gallery Backstage at 2029 N. Lake Ave. in Altadena in connection to the group’s new album, “Mystery Drug.”
Founded in 1999 by local musical heroes Rob Waller and brothers Paul and Anthony Lacques, the band’s self-titled 2001 debut reached the alt country charts.
Joining the band on the small stage will be Tony Gilkyson, the singer-guitarist and former member of X. The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18. More information at (626) 798-6236 and coffeegallery.com.
Waiting for Janigian
Author Aris Janigian will appear and sign his novel, “Waiting for Lipchitz at Chateau Marmont,” at 7:30 p.m. on June 23 at Abril Bookstore at 415 E. Broadway in Glendale. He’ll be in conversation about the book with actor and comedian Lory Tatoulian.
Janigian is the author of three previous novels and a onetime finalist for the William Saroyan Fiction Prize. His new book tells the story of a struggling Hollywood screenwriter who once enjoyed great success. The story takes place largely in the famous hotel in its title and Forestiere’s Underground Garden in Fresno.

Local ‘Beauty’

Following a short intermission, dancers from the Vault will demonstrate jazz, hip-hop, and acrobatic moves. Tickets are $18. More information at (818) 472-6466.
