Tom Shields qualifies for first Olympics
Tom Shields, the former Edison High swim standout, finished second in the 200-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb. Wednesday, to qualify for his first Olympics.
Shields, 24, who also starred at Cal, touched the wall in 1 minute, 55.81 seconds. Michael Phelps qualified for an all-time best fifth Olympics by winning the event in 1:54.84. The top two finishers qualify for the Rio Olympics.
Shields finished almost a second ahead of Jack Conger of Texas to make the Olympic team.
