Open house concludes Lanterman House centennial celebration

Lanterman House on Encinas Drive wrapped up its centennial year celebration Sunday with a holiday open house that drew about 100 visitors, many of them first-time guests to the historic property.

“We were very pleased to see so many people turn out who had never been here before,” said Melissa Patton, executive director of the La Cañada museum, which was built in 1915 as a home for members of the pioneer Lanterman family and first opened as a museum in September 1993.

Patton, who said it is very likely the open house event will be repeated next year, added that she and museum docents saw a “steady flow of people, including several local parents with their young children in tow” who lingered to explore the entire property Sunday afternoon.

Refreshments prepared by Lanterman Foundation President Bob Moses were laid out in the Craftsman-style home’s sun room and live music was provided by four members of the La Cañada High School Chamber Singers who performed Christmas songs a cappella, and did “a remarkably good job of it,” according to Patton.

Lanterman House is closed for the remainder of this year and will open again to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the first and third Sunday of each month. For more information visit lantermanfoundation.org or call (818) 790-1421.
