Altadena Town, Country Club Wins 12th Straight Crest Crown

Altadena Town & Country Club concluded its summer swim season last Saturday by winning its 12th consecutive Crest League title at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center.

The Dolphins compete in the six-team league against country club swim teams from La Cañada, Oakmont, Gerrish, Chevy Chase, and Valley Hunt. The league has a seven-week season each summer for its competitors in age groups from ages 4 to 17.

Altadena outscored second place Oakmont by more than 120 points, 532-411.50. Gerrish Swim and Tennis Club came in third with a score of 277.50. The La Cañada Flintridge Country Club took fourth with a score of 258 points, Chevy Chase Country Club finished in fifth place with a score of 201 and the Valley Hunt Club came in sixth place with a score of 88 points.

The Dolphins were led by 17-year old Alexandra Wiley, 14-year-old Kevin Kuhn, and 11-year-old Jill Shields who each won five events at the meet.

Wiley, who will be a Senior at Pasadena Poly, broke five Crest League meet records in winning the 100 individual medley (1:04.70), 50 freestyle (26.86), and 50 butterfly (28.08). She also was a member of the record-breaking mixed 200 medley relay (1:53.86) as well as the mixed 200 freestyle relay (1:40.35).

Kuhn won the 100 individual medley (1:02.14), 50 butterfly (27.47), and broke league records in winning the 50 freestyle (23.80), mixed 200 medley relay (2:05.72), and mixed 200 freestyle relay (1:47.92). Shields also won five events including the 100 individual medley (1:12.49), 50 butterfly (33.46), mixed 200 medley relay (2:15.78), mixed 200 freestyle relay (2:01.47), and broke the league record in winning the 50 freestyle in 28.35.

The Dolphins won 25 events on the day and broke 12 Crest League records.

Among the other record-breaking swimmers for the Dolphins was Ben Naecker, who will be a senior at Flintridge Prep, who broke the 50 freestyle (22.85) record in the boys 15-17 year old division .Kate Herrill, who broke the 25 breaststroke (28.52) record in winning the girls 6 and Under division.

Altadena also won the girls’ team and boys’ team titles over Oakmont.

La Cañada concluded its tournament softball season last week by playing in Downey’s 14th annual Ponytail Summer Classic.

The 10 and Under team lost a 5-3 first round nail-biter to San Diego’s Bonita Valley squad. Lauren O’Leary drove in two runs for the Spartans with a first inning single, following a double by Kelly Wang.
