La Cañada Elementary School’s Lions proudly showed their colors and caring spirits last Thursday, the final day of the fall semester and their first spirit rally of the new year. Looking like a dark blue sea, wearing their LCE sweatshirts, they clapped with enthusiasm as they were welcomed by members of the student council and sang the school song.
The Lions’ growls turned into thundering applause, as Ed Moulton of the Kiwanis Noon Club presented the Terrific Kids awards to Lucas Matthews from Mr. Berger’s class and Erica Tavera from Ms. Kubilarrsik’s class.
They roared at the top of their lungs when principle Ivette Ellis thanked them for their kindness and efforts, announcing they collected $29,000 for the Save the Children Foundation, as their contribution to the tsunami relief.
“You rock,” said Ellis.
Fifth grade students Payton Parker and Alexandra Vavoulis showed the student body a giant facsimile of the check that will be presented to a representative of the Save the Children Foundation.
“It’s amazing,” they both said, referring to the amount of money the check represented.
Counselor Allison Dalbeck presented Paws for Praise recognition awards to Alexandra Badie, Scottie Platisa, Justin Jenkins, Will Guthrie, Joe Zarefsky, Ethan Steinberg, Cameron Kreishel and Eledy Vargas and others for being extra helpful and kind, as well as taking the initiative to do something necessary, without being asked.
In their final celebration, they honored the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King. Singing to their fellow students, the kindergartners and first graders sang Sing About Martin, the second and third graders sang We’re Not Different and the fourth, fifth and sixth graders sang The Dream of Martin Luther King.
