First Church of Christ, Scientist, La Cañada Flintridge welcomes everyone to a Thanksgiving Day service on Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. at 600 Foothill Blvd. The one-hour service is open to the public.
The church invites the community to join in singing praises to God, and recalls the words of Paul: “Rejoice evermore ... In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (I Thessalonians 5:16, 18)
The service features the Bible lesson, which is read worldwide from the King James version of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These readings glorify God, saying, “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” (II Corinthians 9:15) This gift is the gift of a full salvation from sin, disease, and death. Mary Baker Eddy, the Founder of Christian Science, understood that by Spirit, God, “the sick are healed, the sorrowing are comforted, and the sinning are reformed.” (Science and Health 78:29) Individuals in the congregation freely share testimonies of gratitude for the activity of Spirit, God, in their lives.
The service also includes music and singing of hymns, as well as the reading of the Thanksgiving Day proclamation by the president of the United States (and/or the governor of California).
Sunday services also are held at 10 a.m. and Wednesday evening testimony meetings at 8 p.m. Free child care is provided at all services.
The Christian Science Reading Room is open to the public for prayer, study and purchase of the Weekly Bible Lessons, Christian Science literature and Bible study resources. Hours are weekdays from 10-4 and on Saturdays from 10-2 and for one half hour after the Thanksgiving service and Sunday service.
