Nancy Harahan will be presented the Light of Learning Award for her outstanding contributions to the Los Angeles Public Library’s programs and services on Thursday, May 17.
Harahan is a founding member of The Council of the Library Foundation—a group of volunteers committed to benefiting the Los Angeles Public Library by facilitating special programs and fundraising events that increase public awareness of the programs and services of the Library. She served as president of The Council from 2000 to 2002 and has played a key role in the success of numerous Library Foundation projects. Harahan was the co-chair of The Council’s 2005 Literary Odyssey Dinners and has been a member of the Library Awards dinner committee. Harahan is also a valued member of the Library Foundation’s Board of Directors. Among the Library programs that have benefited from Harahan’s generosity are its children’s reading programs and literacy initiatives.
In addition, Harahan has served on the board of the Flintridge Preparatory School, as a member of The Blue Ribbon (a support group of the Los Angeles Music Center), and as a member of the Assistance League of Southern California. She and her husband, Michael, are residents of La Cañada Flintridge, California.
The Library Foundation of Los Angeles’ Light of Learning Award takes its name from the theme of the 1926 Central Library building, whose design, sculptures, and inscriptions are based on the library’s role as a “light of learning.” The award will be given at the 12th annual Los Angeles Public Library Awards Dinner in downtown Los Angeles on May 17. Past honorees of the Light of Learning Award include Gregory Peck, Harold M. Williams, Flora Laney Thornton, Lodwrick Cook, Gary Ross, Caroline Singleton, and Evelyn Hoffman.
During the awards dinner gala, approximately 600 guests will gather in the Central Library’s Maguire Gardens for a cocktail reception, followed by the awards program, and an elegant dinner at City National Plaza, adjacent to the library.
