CLASSES
Baby-sitting — Jan. 23, Feb. 27. Each class is a single, one-time class, held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Verdugo Hills Hospital Beginnings Family Education Program offers baby-sitting classes designed for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15. The class is an interactive course that teaches participants skills including infant/child CPR, basic first aid, home/auto safety, accident prevention, telephone skills, safety tips, when to call 911, poison control and fire/earthquake plans. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a baby-sitting course completion certificate. Classes are offered at VHH, located at 1812 Verdugo Blvd., Glendale, in the Council Room (located on the 4th floor). Class fee is $35/person. Reservations are required. Music Appreciation — Feb. 16 through June 8, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Tuesday. Dr. Ted Stern, professor of music at Glendale Community College, will again conduct off-campus music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for musicians and non-musicians alike. This semester will cover the early 20th century. Dr. Stern weaves music examples with cultural history to increase the listener’s understanding of the evolution of music. Classes are held at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, located at 2700 Montrose Ave., Montrose. The cost for the 16-week classes is $90.

Square Dance Class — Thursdays from 7:30 – 9 p.m. A weekly Thursday night beginner’s class and workshop for those who would like to brush up on their square dancing steps, presented by Set in Step Square Dance Club, taught at the La Cañada Community Center, 4469 Chevy Chase, La Cañada. Ron Durkee is the professional caller. The dress is casual, $6 per person/per class. Pay when you come to class. To have a partner is suggested but singles are welcome also.

The Arroyo Singers — A women’s chorale that has been serenading the San Gabriel Valley for close to half a century invites new singers to join them and become part of the musical tradition and take part in the upcoming Spring concert. Members meet Tuesday evenings in Pasadena for practice and rehearsal.

Community Expo and 10K/Kids’ K — Jan. 31. The Junior League of Pasadena, Inc. presents the Inaugural Junior League of Pasadena Community Expo and 10K/Kids’ K. The day will kick off at 8 a.m. with a 10K run consisting of two loops around the Rose Bowl. The professionally timed race will have 14 race categories, awards for the top three finishers in each category, and a T-shirt and goodie bag for every participant. A Kids’ K will also be held just before the awards ceremony at 10 a.m. Registration is $20 for the 10K and $10 for the Kids’ K. Registration begins at 6 a.m. day of event.

Caltech Jazz Bands Go Latin — Jan. 30, at 8 p.m. Caltech Jazz Bands, directed by William Bing, will kick off their new year with Latin jazz. The concert will include Latin percussionists, a mariachi band, and salsa dancers, along with jazz selections. This event will be held in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium, 332 S. Michigan Ave. in Pasadena. Admission and parking are free, and no tickets are required. Featured artists include noted composer and arranger Paul Lopez, Latin percussionist Robertito Melendez, Mariachi Alma de Mexico, and Latin dancers Sean Nandayapa and Rita Rivera.
