The Descanso Chrysanthemum Society will hold its 83rd show in Van de Kamp Hall in Descanso Gardens this weekend. According to society officials, it is the longest running mum show in the country and usually features more than 300 blooms. The show is free with admission to the garden and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“All of the colors of mums from yellow, white, purple, pink, bronze, red, and even green will be on display,” says Jay Pengra of La Cañada Flintridge, a mum enthusiast who grows them in his home garden. “The many flower forms can be seen including those with petals incurving up, reflexing down, those of pincushion (anemone) shape, spoon, quill, and spider types as well as the pompon and thistle.”

Pengra adds that small blooming chrysanthemums shaped into trees, cascades and bushes will also be on exhibit, as will large blooms that have been grown in the Fukusuke manner.
