Checking in on former Dodgers from the 2012 club

Think all those players who come and go as Dodgers go on to great things with other organizations?

Not hardly. Here’s a look at the players who spent time with the Dodgers last season who are no longer with the club, and what they’re up to now.

James Loney, Superman of all first basemen aside, mostly they’re not tearing it up. The list:

Bobby Abreu: Out of baseball, reportedly in Venezuela and mulling over 2014 comeback, when he’ll be 40.

Joe Blanton: 0-6, 5.66 earned-run average in seven starts for the Angels. We tried to warn them.

Randy Choate: One who got away, signed with the Cardinals in the off-season and he is again excelling as the left-handed relief specialist (1.93 ERA).

Todd Coffey: Places unknown after undergoing second Tommy John surgery last summer.

Ivan De Jesus: Traded by Boston to Pittsburgh in off-season, currently with Pirates’ triple-A team, batting .323 with .382 on-base and .446 slugging percentages.

Rubby De La Rosa: Still coming back from Tommy John surgery, he has a 5.40 ERA in six starts for triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, has struck out 19 in 16 1/3 innings with eight walks.

Jon Ely: Failed to earn spot in Houston rotation this spring, underwent Tommy John surgery in April.

Nathan Eovaldi: Started season on Marlins’ disabled list with a sore shoulder; they hope to have him back next month. Was penciled in as No. 2 starter, but it is Miami.

Tony Gwynn Jr.: Currently looks buried at triple-A Albuquerque, where he is hitting .256 with 11 runs in 100 plate appearances.

Aaron Harang: Looks like the right starter to unload. He’s 1-4 with a 7.30 ERA in five starts for the Mariners.

Adam Kennedy: Never signed with a team in off-season but still wants to play. Recently opened hitting academy in Anaheim.

Josh Lindblom: Failed to make Rangers’ rotation, now starter at triple-A Round Rock where he is 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA and 0.84 WHIP.

Loney: Leads the American League in hitting at .385 for Tampa Rays. Has only one homer, but does own 11 doubles and .531 slugging percentage (all numbers higher than Adrian Gonzalez).

Mike MacDougal: Never says die. After being released by Dodgers, Cubs and Nationals organizations, currently at triple-A Louisville for the Reds, where he is 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in 10 appearances.

Juan Rivera: Released by the Yankees a month ago, finally signed a minor league contract with the Diamondbacks. Began playing at triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Jerry Sands: Traded with De Jesus to Pittsburgh and threatening to disappear. Currently at triple-A hitting .138 with no home runs. Dodgers’ former minor league player of the year.

Matt Treanor: Released by Dodgers in off-season after $150,000 buyout, did not hook up with another club, though I’m thinking he can still hit better than Ramon Hernandez.

Scott Van Slyke: Back in triple-A, where he’s tearing it up. Could be called up soon.

Shane Victorino: To surprise of those who watched him hit .245 as a Dodger, signed a three-year, $39-million contract with Red Sox, where he is bringing new life to career (.293, 16 runs) at age 32.

Jamey Wright: For the eighth consecutive season, earned roster spot as King of the non-roster invites, this time with Tampa. Currently has a 2.30 ERA and 1.02 WHIP for Rays.
