Top high school championship football games this week
Friday’s CIF state bowl games
Division 1-AA: Harbor City Narbonne (14-0) at San Diego Cathedral Catholic (13-0), 7:30 p.m. — This game should revolve around whether Narbonne’s powerful defense can stop Cathedral’s wing-T offense and quarterback Tate Haynes. Narbonne Coach Manuel Douglas used to coach the wing-T years ago. The Gauchos have been very good against the run. Narbonne quarterback Jalen Chatman has passed for a school-record 50 touchdowns. The pick: Narbonne.
Division 2-AA: Calabasas (14-0) at San Diego Madison (11-2), 7:30 p.m. — Freshman receiver Johnny Wilson has become a star for Calabasas and quarterback Tristan Gebbia has passed for 130 touchdowns in three years. Madison quarterback Terrell Carter has been impressive in big games. The pick: Calabasas.
Division 3-AA: Chula Vista Mater Dei (12-1) vs. Lancaster Paraclete (10-4) at Antelope Valley College, 7:30 p.m. — Linebacker K.J. Latu will need to be at his best to contain Mater Dei running back C.J. Verdell, an Oregon commit. The temperature is expected to be in the 40s at game time. Mater Dei’s only loss is to Los Angeles Hawkins. The pick: Paraclete.
Division 5-AA: Moreno Valley Valley View (11-3) at San Gorgonio (11-3), 7:30 p.m. — Quarterback Kaleb Hayes keeps making big plays passing and running for San Gorgonio. Junior Justin Keeling has 1,891 yards rushing. The pick: San Gorgonio.
Division 6-AA: Temecula Rancho Christian (12-2) at Franklin (13-1), 7:30 p.m. — Franklin’s David Telles couldn’t be stopped last week in the City Section Division III championship game. But Rancho Christian Coach Jim Kunau usually has some tricks up his sleeve. The pick: Rancho Christian.
