Baseball: Foothill League teams sweep Mission League in Division 1 openers

It was a good day for the Foothill League. All three teams won their Southern Section Division 1 playoff openers on Thursday via shutouts of Mission League opponents.

Jack Ralston struck out eight and threw a two-hitter in Hart’s 3-0 win over Alemany. Kevin Chandler threw a complete game and came through with a strikeout with the bases loaded in the seventh in Valencia’s 1-0 win over Loyola. Saugus routed No. 4-seeded Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 10-0. Caden Maher threw 5 2/3 winnings and Caden Salkeld hit a grand slam.

In the longest game of the day, Arlington outlasted Corona, 1-0, in 17 innings, scoring the winning run on an error. Cole Cardey of Arlington allowed one hit in nine innings.

Harvard-Westlake was the only Mission League team to advance, beating Vista Murrieta, 6-3, in 10 innings. Leo Kaplan had a two-run double in the 10th. Jake Suddleson tied the game with a two-out home run in the seventh and threw out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the seventh. He finished with three hits.

Calabasas won its first-ever Division 1 playoff game by knocking off Moore League champion Lakewood, 7-2. Grant Nechak threw a complete game and contributed two hits and two RBIs. Nate Ryngler added two hits and two RBIs.

Marmonte League champion Agoura rallied for a 4-3 win over Edison. Joey Dawes went three for three. Bryce Fehmel threw two shutout innings of relief.

No. 1 JSerra defeated Temecula Valley, 8-3. Chase Strumpf had a home run and Jake Pries contributed two doubles. No. 2 Huntington Beach defeated Roosevelt, 7-2. Hagen Danner went three for three and threw 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief. North defeated Orange Lutheran, 3-1. Andrew Quintero threw a complete game, allowing four hits. Cole Spear and Jacob Castro of Orange Lutheran allowed two hits.

Long Beach Millikan defeated Cypress, 7-2. Jacob Hughey struck out six and allowed four hits. Long Beach Wilson rallied for a 4-3 win over Aliso Niguel, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh. Chris Betts had the game-winning RBI single.

Norco defeated Dana Hills, 3-0, behind a shutout from Kyle Hatton. El Dorado defeated Tustin, 6-0. Nick Sprengel struck out 11 and allowed two hits. Derek Reilly had four RBIs.

Fountain Valley defeated El Modena, 1-0, in nine innings. Sophomore Travis Burleson allowed five hits in nine innings to outduel Brett Conine, who struck out six in eight innings.

Capistrano Valley defeated Murrieta Valley, 6-0.

In Division 3, San Dimas improved to 29-0 with a 9-0 win over La Quinta. Peter Lambert allowed one hit, struck out four and walked none. Beckman defeated Segerstrom, 4-3, in 10 innings on a walk-off hit by Willie Lajoie.

Lars Nootbaar went four for four with three RBIs in El Segundo’s 15-0 win over St. Joseph. Clarence Carter, Sergio Robles, Jayson Gonzalez and Ben Hurst each had two hits in Bishop Amat’s 7-1 win over Palos Verdes. Northwood defeated Mira Costa, 3-1, in 10 innings.

Temescal Canyon defeated Indio, 4-0. Devin McKesson struck out 10 and allowed two hits. Eli Thomas and Tyler Hardman hit home runs.

In Division 5, Sierra Canyon defeated Southlands Christian, 9-1. Brock Bell, Jake Patterson and Mike Croft each had two hits. Village Christian defeated Templeton, 2-0. Chris Davidson threw a no-hitter. Gordon Ingebritson hit a two-run home run.
