Baseball: Hart hits the jackpot in Las Vegas with championship
Any scenarios about teams capable of winning it all in Southern Section Division 1 this season had better include Newhall Hart (13-2-1), which won the championship of the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas on Saturday by defeating host Bishop Gorman, 9-4, in a nine-inning thriller.
Colby Kaneshiro hit a three-run home run and Troy Gilbert threw four innings of shutout relief. Fellow Foothill League school West Ranch lost to Georgia Blessed Trinity, 10-6.
Bonita came away with a 2-1 victory over Harvard-Westlake. Bonita improved to 12-5. Harvard-Westlake faces Loyola on Monday at home and on Thursday at Loyola in a critical two-game Mission League series.
Glendora improved to 4-0 in the Baseline League with a 2-0 win over Alta Loma. Eric Flores threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. Joey Deceglie threw a no-hitter in Los Osos’ 5-0 win over Etiwanda.
Bishop Amat defeated Palisades, 9-3. Adrian Ramirez had two hits and four RBIs. Christian Moya, Scott Hurst and Serio Robles each had two hits.
Cypress defeaed West Torrance, 12-4.
Oaks Christian defeated Suaugs, 13-3. Tyson Quolas struck out nine. Noah Prewett continued his hot hitting, getting three hits, including his third home run in the last two games. Adam Kerner and Phile Quartararo each had three hits.
Village Christian defeated Estancia, 10-1. David Barta threw five innings without allowing a hit. Fernando Pizano went four for four.
Granada Hills Kennedy improved to 13-3 with a 7-6 win over San Pedro. Chris Sandberg had two RBIs.
