Baseball: Hart wins the VIBL championship
The summer season ended on Tuesday night with the championship game of the Valley Invitational Baseball League at Birmingham High, and Newhall Hart emerged as the champion with an 8-4 victory over Foothill League rival Saugus.
UCLA-bound Nick Valaika of Hart had two singles and two RBIs. Dillon Klement, a catcher whose father, Tim, was a standout at Sylmar in the 1980s, delivered a two-run single. Chad Haslock had three singles.
It was a productive summer for a Hart team that has lots of talented young players and didn’t even use one of its best players, infielder Dayton Provost, who has been healing a hamstring injury.
Coach Jim Ozella will have lots of pitchers to choose from in the spring.
As for Saugus, the Centurions also have a good group of young players. Junior Rex Kemple, an outfielder, had a double and single.
And the Centurions will have one of the best pitchers in the league in junior Eric Little.
