Baseball: Notre Dame coach receives reassuring news about Giancarlo Stanton
It was rough night for Sherman Oaks Notre Dame baseball Coach Tom Dill, who was greatly concerned about his former player, Giancarlo Stanton, of the Miami Marlins after watching on television the replay of Stanton getting hit in the face on Thursday night from a pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers.
“I was pretty upset,” Dill said. “I didn’t even sleep last night.”
News was better on Friday, with Stanton being released from a hospital after suffering “facial lacerations, requiring stitches, multiple facial fractures and dental damage,” according to the Marlins.
Stanton’s father, Mike, was at the game. Dill spoke with him Thursday night by phone and received a text from Giancarlo on Friday.
“It sounds like he’s going to be OK,” Dill said. “His attitude is, ‘I’m coming back as soon as possible.’”
Stanton is pretty tough. He played football, basketball and baseball during his days at Notre Dame.
He’s a top candidate for MVP honors in the National League with 37 home runs and 105 RBIs.
