Baseball: Redondo states its case for being No. 1 team in Southern California

Behind 6-foot-8 pitcher Sean Reynolds, Redondo won its second consecutive Southern Section Division 3 championship on Saturday, defeating Woodbridge, 2-1, at San Manuel Stadium.

Reynolds, a Rice signee, improved to 11-0. He struck out four, walked two and gave up five hits. He broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning when he had a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single from Danny Zimmerman.

Redondo finishes 31-2. Reynolds, who had nine home runs, made the kind of improvement this season to make him an invaluable player in big games. But he had lots of support from such players as Zimmerman, Santa Clara-bound shortstop Jason Dicochea and Nevada-bound catcher Marco Valenzuela.

Dicochea had an RBI single to give Redondo a 1-0 lead.

Coach Jeff Baumback, a former Long Beach Wilson assistant, said he believes this year’s Redondo team is as good as the Wilson 2007 team that finished No. 1 in the nation.

As for Redondo’s toughness, Reynolds said, “We’ll fight until the last out. We never give up.”

Woodbridge finished 23-8. Jake Larson walked six and gave up four hits in six innings.
