Baseball: USA 18U team defeats Japan, 3-2, to win gold medal
Three standout high school baseball seniors from Southern California will be returning home with a gold medal.
The USA 18U baseball team won the IBAF World Cup in Taiwan on Sunday, defeating Japan, 3-2, in the championship game.
From defeating Cuba to rallying several times in the tournament, the USA team was able to pull out victory.
Making major contributions throughout were pitcher-infielder Jack Flaherty of Studio City Harvard-Westlake, pitcher Jacob Nix of Los Alamitos and outfielder Scott Hurst of La Puente Bishop Amat. All are expected to be top players in Southern Section Division 1 for their senior seasons next spring.
What a year it has been for Flaherty, who won the Southern Section Division 1 championship and was named player of the year.
Flaherty is committed to North Carolina, Nix with UCLA and Hurst with Cal State Fullerton. They’ll be home soon and back to school with lots of stories to tell. And homework to do.
