Boys’ basketball: North Hollywood knocks off Grant in East Valley League opener
The City Section began league play on Wednesday, and North Hollywood came away with a 58-52 win over Grant in the East Valley League. Sean Fernandez, the son of first-year Coach Jose Fernandez, scored 21 points for the Huskies. Poly (6-0) defeated Monroe, 87-62.
In the Coliseum League, Crenshaw defeated Manual Arts, 78-58. View Park defeated West Adams, 82-36. Chance Comanche had 24 points.
In the Ventura County Classic, Jamani Spencer scored 18 points in Sierra Canyon’s 69-39 win over Royal. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Camarillo, 78-68. Elijah Ellen had 26 points and 11 rebounds. Luca Ferrari added 20 points and Cameron Glassen 18. Valencia defeated Westlake, 71-57. Isaiah Brooks led Westlake with 15 points.
Viewpoint came close to knocking off another Mission League team before falling to Alemany, 72-70. Christian Juzang made five threes and finished with 22 points. Tim Howell added 14 points. Calabasas defeated Oaks Christian, 62-57, with Conner Longmire scoring 18 points.
The matchups for Friday’s semifinals at Moorpark: Viewpoint vs. Oaks Christian, 3:30 p.m.; Sylmar vs. Westlake, 5 p.m.; Calabasas vs. Alemany, 6:30 p.m,.; Sierra Canyon vs. Valencia, 8 p.m.
In the Glendora tournament, Malik Fitts scored 22 points and Jeremy Hemsley added 13 points and six assists in Damien’s 89-33 win over Serrano. Damien is 3-0.
In the University tournament, Price defeated Roybal, 86-53. Windward defeated Bell-Jeff, 87-58.
