Boys’ basketball: Mayfair upsets St. John Bosco, 60-56
Lakewood Mayfair rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to upset Bellflower St. John Bosco, 60-56, on Friday in a semifinal game of the Redondo tournament. Mayfair will play Redondo in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. final. Redondo upset Westchester, 65-64.
“Defense and rebounding,” Coach Tony Davis said of his team’s comeback.
Dillon Reise contributed some key baskets in the second half. Kendall Small came on strong and Michael Nwabuzor played strong defense on Tyler Dorsey and finished with 18 points.
“We got into a groove offensively,” Davis said.
Daniel Hamilton had 20 points and Dorsey 19 for St. John Bosco.
Ian Fox scored 29 points in Redondo’s victory over Westchester.
In consolation games, Isaiah Bailey scored 29 points in Compton’s 78-66 win over Long Beach Millikan. Long Beach Poly defeated Campbell Hall, 56-45, with Kameron Murrell scoring 19 points. Aaron Holiday had 20 for Campbell Hall.
Campbell Hall will be without point guard Kahlil Simplis for three weeks with a high ankle sprain. Calabasas defeated Narbonne, 51-43. Larry Bush had 17 points. Calabasas will play Lawndale for the consolation championship at 4:30 p.m.
St. John Bosco will play Westchester at 6 p.m. for third place.
In the championship game of the Alhambra tournament, San Marcos defeated Crenshaw. L.A. University took third place with a 66-59 win over Whittier. Tre Weston had 30 points.
