Football: Cleveland is 4-0 and making noise
Reseda Cleveland hasn’t had a winning football season since 2009. After seasons of 2-8, 5-6, 1-9 and 3-7, the surprising Cavaliers improved to 4-0 on Saturday night with a 37-21 win over Santa Clarita Christian.
Leading the Cavaliers’ resurgence has been 6-foot-3 senior quarterback Zack Fraade, who played safety last season, and senior running back Mark Sanchez, who had three touchdowns on Saturday and at least 15 tackles at linebacker. Both have lots of speed.
First-year Coach Aubrey Duncan used to coach at L.A. Marshall. He was hired as an assistant coach at Cleveland in the spring, then elevated to head coach in July. The late start left little time to practice during the summer but caused him to keep “things simple.”
Aided by a big offensive line, the Cavaliers figure to be 5-0 going into the start of West Valley League play in two weeks against Chatsworth. They have wins over Kennedy, Reseda and Van Nuys. Things will get tougher, but Duncan likes his team.
“They needed a coach, but I’m lucky to have them,” he said.
