Football: Corona Centennial outlasts Orange Lutheran, 52-49
After struggling last week against Santa Ana Mater Dei, the old Corona Centennial offense returned on Saturday. The Huskies rolled up 643 yards in total offense and defeated Orange Lutheran, 52-49, in the Honor Bowl at Oceanside High.
JJ Taylor had touchdown runs of 63 and 79 yards and finished with 266 yards rushing. Centennial (1-1) successfully rotated quarterbacks Anthony Catalano and Nate Kerrington.
For Orange Lutheran (1-1), fullback Patrick Reardon rushed for 164 yards and scored three touchdowns.
Centennial next gets Bishop Gorman, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today.
Oaks Christian dropped to 0-2 after a 28-21 loss to San Diego Cathedral Catholic. Holden Thomas passed for 283 yards and two touchdowns. Jeremy Vincent caught eight passes for 87 yards.
The Lions had tied the game in the fourth quarter on a seven-yard TD reception by Michael Pittman, who caught nine passes for 103 yards.
In the final game of the night, Bellevue defeated Gardena Serra, 31-14, for its 55th consecutive victory. Sam Richmond scored three touchdowns. Bellevue’s wing-T offense controlled the game and the clock with counter plays and misdirection plays.
Job McGinty had Serra’s only touchdown on a seven-yard run.
