Football: Crespi is no longer running veer offense

For two seasons, Encino Crespi ran the veer offense similar to Concord De La Salle. It helped the Celts win a league title two seasons ago. Last season, Crespi finished 2-8.

Now Celts Coach Troy Thomas is making a change in philosophy. He has hired Taft Coach Deron Braswell to turn Crespi into a spread team, believing his personnel requires moving away from the run-oriented veer attack.

“We have some very good young players who are explosive,” Thomas said.

Two seasons ago, Crespi was one of the best teams running the ball in Southern California.

The switch to a spread offense should receive positive feedback from the quarterbacks and receivers. But the veer also made Crespi unique and opponents will probably be thankful they don’t have to spend a week teaching defensive players how to handle the veer option game.
