Football: Harry Welch offers wisdom on how to defeat De La Salle
Concord De La Salle doesn’t lose very often, but one of the teams to beat the Spartans was Canyon Country Canyon and Coach Harry Welch in the 2006 CIF state championship Division I bowl game.
De La Salle (14-0) faces St. John Bosco (15-0) in Saturday’s Open Division final at StubHub Center.
Welch, who recently retired at Santa Margarita and has faced St. John Bosco, said the Braves must deal with De La Salle’s execution.
“To me, the execution of De La Salle is legendary,” Welch said. “For one night, our execution was their equal or superior.
“I think St. John Bosco is not only the most talented team I’ve seen since 1965, they have the ability to execute extremely well. If they approach maximum execution, they will win. If they don’t, it will be a coin flip.”
As for Welch’s future, don’t look for him to return to coaching even though new jobs keep popping open. He’s going to be traveling around the world.
“I’m going to see many parts of the world in the next eight months,” he said. “There’s incredible places.”
