Football: It’s the week for big game after big game
Davis has led Braves to 5-0 start
This is the week fans will have many choices to watch quality high school football. It’s the week of big game after big game.
The Trinity League begins its grueling five weeks of showdowns. Since there’s no guarantee this season that the No. 4 or even No. 5 finishers are going to receive a Pac-5 playoff berth, it becomes even more imperative to finish in the top three.
The opening week schedule has Orange Lutheran vs. Santa Ana Mater Dei at Orange Coast College; JSerra vs. Servite at Cerritos College and Santa Margarita vs. St. John Bosco at Saddleback College.
In the Mission League, the two preseason favorites, Gardena Serra and Bishop Amat, have their showdown at Serra. Expect lots of college coaches on the sideline.
The Sunset League begins on Thursday night with the annual matchup of Los Alamitos taking on Edison at Huntington Beach.
On Friday, a wide-open Foothill League begins with the upstarts trying to upend the longtime dominant teams. It’s Golden Valley at Valencia, Hart at Canyon and West Ranch vs. Saugus at College of the Canyons.
In the Bay League, unbeaten Mira Costa faces a test from Palos Verdes in a day game at Palos Verdes. In the Southwestern, Vista Murrieta is at Great Oak. In the South Coast, El Toro is at Tesoro, which finds out on Monday the seriousness of a shoulder injury to quarterback Devon Modster.
In nonleague games, it will be the battle of the unbeatens when Thousand Oaks plays at Oaks Christian. Camarillo finds out how good it is with a game against St. Bonaventure at Ventura College.
In the City Section, the Coliseum League begins with Crenshaw hosting unbeaten Los Angeles. In the Marine League, Banning will try to regain relevance with a home game against San Pedro.
In the West Valley League, unbeaten Chatsworth, which barely got past Palisades last week, takes on Taft on the road. There could be lots of points scored, so prepare to drink lots of coffee.
The Thousand Oaks-Oaks Christian game will be shown on Prime Ticket. Games on Prep Zone via the web are Bishop Amat-Serra, St. Bonaventure-Camarillo, St. Francis-Salesian and Paso Robles-Arroyo Grande.
