Football: Josh Davis emerges from the shadows at Gardena Serra
Josh Davis isn’t the most well-known prospect at Gardena Serra. Certainly not when you consider the high-profile nature of his teammates. The senior, however, is slowly carving out his niche. The days of flying under the radar could be coming to an end.
Once an afterthought in recruiting, Davis is receiving interest from multiple colleges. Rightfully so, given his efforts this season as the Cavaliers prepare to face La Puente Bishop Amat in a Mission League game on Friday night.
“Look around, we have players here that are doing big things. That’s OK with me too. I’m happy for everyone. Those guys are family,” Davis said. “I don’t worry about the headlines. I know my time is coming. I have a job to do, that’s my concern, taking care of business.”
The 6-foot-1, 265-pounder is a two-way starter along the line of scrimmage for the Cavaliers (4-1 overall, 1-0 in league). How well he does at offensive guard and defensive end could be vital against the Lancers (2-3, 0-1).
Davis will have plenty of help from fellow upperclassmen Rasheem Green, John Houston Jr., Stanley Norman, Malik Roberson and Deontay Burnett. Same thing can be said about juniors Brandon Burton and Blake Walls.
“Josh is one of those kids that just gets it, he’s talented and understands his role,” Serra Coach Scott Altenberg said. “He’s a glue guy, adds to the overall chemistry and knows what’s expected of him once the ball is snapped. Every team needs someone like Josh Davis.”
Several schools at the next level are on the same page as Altenberg. Each appears to value Davis, most notably Army and Brigham Young. He hasn’t landed his first scholarship offer though. With a 4.2-plus grade-point average, an offer could materialize.
Also worth mentioning, Davis will play in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl. Find out more on his journey right here. “We’re pumped that Josh will be showcased in national game. After waiting for a turn in the spotlight, no one deserves the honor more than him,” Altenberg said.
