Football: Lots of collisions in first day of full contact practices
Birmingham players get to practice tackling
City Section football teams that have been practicing since July 27 held their first day of full contact workouts on Monday.
At Birmingham High, players got to demonstrate their tackling skills. There were collisions and even a pair of 110-pound players squaring off.
There are new practice rules this season that limit full-contact workouts to 90 minutes in duration and only two days a week.
Birmingham Coach Jim Rose said he did not have any concerns with the limitations for varsity players but expressed reservations regarding young players who haven’t had any training.
“I think the kids who have never played football before, it puts them at a greater risk of not being able to perform blocking or proper tackling,” he said.
Many teams will hold scrimmages next Thursday or Friday.
