Football: Mater Dei wins Dana Hills passing tournament
Santa Ana Mater Dei is making some early noise in the summer passing tournaments, winning its second of the month on Saturday in defeating Edison in the championship game of the Dana Hills tournament.
Junior quarterback Matthew McDonald made some clutch throws, and receiver Andre Collins, injured late last season, is making an impact now that he’s healthy. Sophomore C.J. Parks had a couple huge catches in the final. The defense, led by linebacker Curtis Robinson and cornerback Jalen Cole, was solid all day, Coach Bruce Rollinson said.
“I like his progress,” Rollinson said of McDonald.
Edison won its first six games of the day, led by receiver Garrett White and quarterback Grant Lowary. Defensive back Gasper Atencio also played well for the Chargers, who knocked off Santa Margarita en route to reaching the final.
In the Saugus passing tournament, Bishop Amat defeated Alemany in the final.
Alemany defeated Narbonne in one semifinal, and Bishop Amat defeated Calabasas in the other semifinal.
