Football: Sophomore D’mitri Mata is having huge season for Maranatha
Sophomore defensive back-receiver D’mitri Mata of unbeaten Pasadena Maranatha is having the kind of season that screams for attention.
Mata has seven interceptions for the unbeaten Minutemen (11-0). On Friday night in a playoff opener against Mission Prep, he made two interceptions and caught six passes for 106 yards and one touchdown in a 47-21 victory.
“He’s very good,” Coach Steve Bogan said. “He has a football sense and presence. He internalizes how the game is played. He reads patterns. When he goes up for a football with someone, he tends to come down with it.”
Maranatha is seeded No. 1 in the Northwest Division and plays Arrowhead Christian on Friday.
