Football: South Gate-South East rivalry game is set for Friday
While Roosevelt and Garfield will be playing in the East L.A. Classic on Friday night, there’s another huge Eastern League rivalry game between South East and host South Gate. They are two of three high schools in South Gate. The other is Legacy.
South Gate Coach Jose Casagran, who was the head coach at Roosevelt and an assistant at Garfield, said South Gate-South East is just as good a rivalry game but on a smaller scale.
“It’s a great high school rivalry,” he said.
South East is 3-5 and 2-2. It has picked up a nice transfer in the middle of the season in quarterback Johnny Romero, who returned to the school.
South Gate is 7-1 and 4-0 and rolling behind quarterback Miguel Guerra, who has 2,099 yards passing and 21 touchdowns and 860 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. Tremar Holiness has rushed for 860 yards. Four players who missed last week’s game against Roosevelt will be back this week.
Once a Rough Rider, always a Rough Rider for Casagran. He’ll be checking the Garfield-Roosevelt score after his game.
