Football: Time for Trinity League intrigue

The Trinity League begins on Friday, and no game is more intriguing than the matchup of Servite (2-3) taking on JSerra (5-0) at Cerritos College.

That’s because few people have been able to figure out either team.

JSerra is unbeaten but has played perhaps the weakest schedule of any Trinity team. The Lions have so many new players that few standouts have emerged other than Avery Williams, a transfer from St. Francis who has scored 10 touchdowns. JSerra’s strength is its offensive line.

Servite, under first-year Coach Scott Meyer, lost the three games it was supposed to lose _ to powerhouses Bishop Amat, De La Salle and Bishop Gorman. It won the two games that it was supposed to win against Fountain Valley and Edison. Now comes test time. Junior quarterback Tyler Lytle gets to show what he has learned.

Last season, the No. 4 and No. 5 finishers in the Trinity League received at-large playoff berths to the Pac-5 Division. This season, that might not happen, because the Marmonte and Mission leagues have strong candidates at-large candidates.

The other opening games have Orange Lutheran playing Santa Ana Mater Dei at Orange Coast College and St. John Bosco taking on Santa Margarita at Saddleback College.

Orange Lutheran has played a tough nonleague schedule and figures to present a severe challenge to the Monarchs and freshman quarterback J.T. Daniels.

St. John Bosco’s improved defense will get to face Stanford-bound quarterback K.J. Costello of Santa Margarita.

It’s going to be an interesting five weeks of Trinity action. Next week, it’s Mater Dei vs. St. John Bosco at Santa Ana Stadium. But only sportswriters and fans can look ahead, for if players do that, that’s a recipe for certain defeat.
