Softball: Chatsworth holds off Carson to win City Section Division I title
It took a strikeout by standout pitcher Kyla Gendler in the bottom of the seventh to enable Chatsworth High to emerge with a 6-5 victory over Carson in the City Section Division I championship softball game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. It was Chatsworth’s first softball title.
The No. 1-seeded Chancellors and No. 2-seeded Colts battled back and forth.
Carson tied the game, 3-3, on a two-run home run by Briana Ryan in the fifth. But Chatsworth scored three runs in the sixth, keyed by a two-run double from Janice Hernandez.
Carson closed the deficit to 6-5 in the seventh, but that’s when Gendler came up with the game-ending strikeout.
In the Division II final, Chavez defeated Garfield, 4-1, behind freshman pitcher Mia Macias.
In the Division IV final, Northridge Academy defeat VAAS, 3-0, with Juliana Dominguez throwing the shutout.
