Prep baseball roundup: Mater Dei is 5-0 under first-year coach
Richard Mercado has made an immediate positive first impression as the new baseball coach at Santa Ana Mater Dei.
The Monarchs (5-0) won their division of the Newport Elks tournament championship on Friday, rallying for a 6-5 win over Trinity League rival JSerra. Andrew Chorbagian delivered a walk-off double in the seventh.
Michael Curialle had led JSerra to a 5-3 lead with a pair of doubles. Hunter Cope struck out 10 for Mater Dei.
Cypress 12, El Toro 1: Brett Wozniak struck out five and walked none in five scoreless innings for unbeaten Cypress (5-0). Cameron Repetti had two hits and four RBIs and Tyler Chaffee and Noah Carter hit home runs.
Orange Lutheran 5-6, Texas Carroll 0-1: The Lancers’ pitching staff was magnificient in a doubleheader sweep. Six pitchers allowed one run in 14 innings. Jasiah Dixon had two hits in the first game and Max Rajcic had three RBIs in the second game.
Beckman 15, Garey 2: Josh Tamura had three hits and Ricky Teel contributed three RBIs.
Corona Santiago 2, Bishop Amat 1: Ryan Silvers allowed one run in six innings.
Agoura 4, Simi Valley 2: Justin Campbell struck out nine in five innings for Simi Valley. Aaron Suval had seven strikeouts in four innings for Agoura.
Capistrano Valley 8, Temecula Valley 2: Brennan Beckley and Danny Tiotuico each had two hits for Capistrano Valley.
Esperanza 5, Roosevelt 1: Cole Hoffman threw four shutout innings of relief.
Servite 5, El Modena 0: Jake Lappin and Matthew Schavone combined on the shutout.
Aliso Niguel 6, Sonora 3: Quinn Mathews finished with three hits and two RBIs. Braeden Tolman had two doubles.
La Mirada 6, Vista Murrieta 5: Dominic Harris had three hits to lead a La Mirada comeback victory. Darius Perry hit a home run. Steven Riddle finished with three hits for Vista Murrieta.
Corona 4, Chino Hills 3: The Panthers (4-1) got the go-ahead run on a Michael Flores sacrifice fly.
Poly 3, Kennedy 2: Antonio Sanchez had the game-winning RBI. Juan Rodriguez struck out seven.
Granada Hills 8, Roosevelt 4: Isaiah Velazco and Alberto Prado each had two RBIs for the Highlanders.
Arcadia 9, Etiwanda 2: Jeffrey Castillo went four for four and Mikey Easter added three hits and three RBIs for Arcadia.
Moorpark 7, Royal 1: Zach Tucker was three for three and freshman Yahir Garcia added two hits and three RBIs to help Moorpark win its league opener.
Camarillo 19, Oak Park 2: Jakob Schardt hit a three-run double.
Newport Harbor 2, Trabuco Hills 0: Kelly Austin and James Ferrell combined for a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts.
South Torrance 5, Redondo 3: Cade Bargar hit a home run and Christopher Wada contributed three RBIs.
Oaks Christian 4, Maranatha 3: The Lions handed a rare defeat on Maranatha ace Dawson Netz, who struck out 11 in six innings. Rhylan Thomas had two hits.
Laguna Beach 5, Segerstrom 2: The Breakers improved to 6-1 and won their division of the Newport Elks tournament.
