Another allegation is filed against Jerry Sandusky

A 19-year-old man has filed a complaint with state police alleging he was sexually abused by Jerry Sandusky after the former coach gave him liquor on the Penn State campus in 2004, the accuser’s lawyer said Tuesday.

Charles Schmidt said the client, whom he did not identify, came to his law firm about three weeks ago, after Sandusky was charged with sexually abusing eight children over a 15-year period.

Joseph Amendola, Sandusky’s lawyer, said he was not familiar with the allegations Schmidt was making.

The new claim came the same day a lawyer for a different young man who accused Sandusky of sexual abuse said he expects his client and at least five other alleged victims to testify at a preliminary hearing next week.

The lawyer said he has information that the six young men whose testimony before a grand jury contributed to a report detailing allegations against Sandusky will be called to testify next Tuesday.

Sandusky is charged with 40 counts of child sex abuse and prosecutors allege he met his victims through the Second Mile, a charity he founded in 1977 to help at-risk children. Sandusky, 67, denies being a pedophile and has vowed to fight the charges. In interviews with NBC and the New York Times, he has said he showered and horsed around with boys but never sexually abused them.

Schmidt told the Associated Press that his client was 12-years old, dealing with the death of his mother and suffering emotional issues at the time of the single, alleged incident on the campus.

Also Tuesday, Penn State President Rodney Erickson told skeptical faculty members not to worry that school trustees would “whitewash” their own an investigation. Erickson pledged to the University Faculty Senate that investigators will have unfettered access to and cooperation from the school.

Galaxy wins exhibition that may be Beckham’s last with team

David Beckham lifted a trophy in what could be his final game for the Galaxy, an exhibition victory at Melbourne, Australia, over Australian A-League team Melbourne Victory on penalty shots.

The 36-year-old former England captain was given the man of the match award after the Galaxy’s 4-3 shootout win following a 2-2 draw.

Beckham didn’t score but provided several classy touches. He contract ended with the Galaxy’s season and he hasn’t said where he will play next year. He is said to be weighing offers to remain in the United States or to join the French club Paris St. Germain.

Beckham’s every move cheered by a 34,000 crowd until he was substituted three minutes from the end. His audacious lob from inside his own half on 13 minutes, which just missed, was reminiscent of the 1996 goal for Manchester United against Wimbledon from similar range that launched him to stardom.

The U.S. Under-23 men’s national soccer team was drawn into Group A, alongside Canada, Cuba and El Salvador, for next spring’s CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament. The teams will play their three group matches at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn., March 22-26.

The Home Depot Center in Carson will play host to Group B, which consists of Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. Matches in that group will be played March 23-27.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the tournament semifinals at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City on March 31. Winners of both semifinal matches advance to next summer’s London Olympic Games.

The Humana Challenge, the PGA Tour event in La Quinta formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic, will be played over three courses — the Palmer and Nicklaus private courses at PGA West and La Quinta Country Club — and be reduced to four rounds instead of five. In previous years, four courses have been used.

The tournament had been operating without a title sponsor for two years after Chrysler Corp. pulled out, but the healthcare company Humana and the William J. Clinton Foundation have entered an eight-year agreement to sponsor the event. The tournament, in which one amateur will be paired with a professional in each of the first three rounds, will be held Jan. 19-22.

Ted Ligety turned in a blazing second run in frigid conditions to capture a World Cup giant slalom race on a demanding Birds of Prey course at Beaver Creek., Colo. The three-time overall GS champion flew down the hill in a combined time of 2 minutes 40.01 seconds to hold off Marcel Hirscher of Austria by 0.69 of a second. Kjetil Jansrud of Norway was third.

Thomas “Hitman” Hearns, the first man to win titles in four divisions, tops a list of 13 people elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum. Hearns, who won five titles altogether, compiled a 155-8 amateur record and was 61-5-1 with 48 knockouts as a pro.

Also selected to the Hall, located in Canastota, N.Y., were: Mark Johnson, a two-division champion; ring announcer Michael Buffer; trainer Freddie Roach; broadcaster Al Bernstein; and journalist Michael Katz.
