UCLA basketball team tries it again in Texas ... 44 years later
A UCLA basketball team with high expectations travels to Houston to play a Texas team in a football stadium … stop me if you’ve heard this one already.
History is not on UCLA’s side when the Bruins play Texas in Reliant Stadium on Saturday.
It’s been 44 years since UCLA last tried this. Lew Alcindor came back with his first collegiate loss. Houston, led by Elvin Hayes, upset the No. 1-ranked Bruins in the Astrodome.
The Longhorns are nowhere near as formidable as the 1968 Houston Cougars. After all, they lost to USC and Chaminade -- toss-up which one hurts more.
Of course, UCLA is hardly the team it was in 1968 either (see Cal Poly San Luis Obispo game tape).
