Galaxy’s Landon Donovan voted to 12th consecutive All-Star team
Galaxy captain Landon Donovan was selected to a record 12th consecutive All-Star team Sunday, earning a spot on Major League Soccer’s First XI as voted by the fans.
He’ll be joined on the squad by teammate David Beckham, a three-time All-Star selection.
Members of the First XI will not necessarily be included on the game-day roster for the MLS All-Star game against Chelsea of the English Premier League on July 25. All-Star Coach Ben Olsen of D.C. United will select the playing roster based on player availability and tactical considerations.
But under the byzantine MLS system, the leaders in the fan voting are considered All-Stars whether they dress for the game or not.
The MLS First XI:
Goakeeper: Jimmy Nielsen (Sorting Kansas City)
Defenders: Steven Beitashour (San Jose Earthquakes), Aurélien Collin (Sporting Kansas City), Jay DeMerit (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Heath Pearce (New York Red Bulls)
Midfielders: David Beckham (Galaxy), Dwayne De Rosario (D.C. United), Landon Donovan (Galaxy), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)
Forwards: Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
