David Garrard reportedly to be released by Miami Dolphins

David Garrard must really hate the week leading up to the start of the NFL season.

For the second year in a row, it appears the veteran quarterback will be released five days before his team’s opening game. Last year, it was the Jacksonville Jaguars; now it’s the Miami Dolphins.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer tweeted Monday afternoon: “Just got a text from David Garrard that he is being released from Fins today.”

Around the same time, Garrard posted a Twitter message of his own that seemed to confirm the report: “To all the dolphins fans thx for ur support! Best of luck to all my teammates. Thx for making me feel at home!! Phins up!”

Garrard, who hasn’t been able to play since having knee surgery in early August, is still listed on the Dolphins’ depth chart but as the No. 4 quarterback, behind starter Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore and Pat Devlin.

After spending the first nine years of his pro career with Jacksonville, Garrard was cut by the Jaguars just hours after being introduced as the team’s starter at a luncheon. The Dolphins initially pursued him during the season but the quarterback opted to get his back fixed instead.

Garrard was signed by Miami during the off-season and was given the chance to compete for the starting job with the rookie Tannehill and the incumbent Moore. He has not been able to play since having knee surgery in early August.
